This Friday Night Kirtan is centered on the theme Learning to Let Go, using sacred sound and repetition as a way to soften effort, release control, and allow devotion to arise naturally. Each week, we focus on one kirtan melody that is learned, practiced, and carried forward so it becomes something lived, not just heard.
In bhakti, letting go does not mean giving up. It means releasing the constant pressure to manage everything ourselves. Chanting helps us practice this gently. We do not force the heart open. We allow sound to do the work.
The mantra we chant is simple and familiar, yet endlessly deep. It does not demand analysis or explanation. It simply invites presence.
The Maha Mantra
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare
This mantra is traditionally chanted in a call-and-response form, making it easy to participate whether you are singing, humming, or listening quietly.
This week’s melody is flowing and cyclical. It is designed to encourage ease rather than precision. We begin by listening, then gently joining when it feels natural. There is no correct entry point and no need to rush.
After learning the melody by ear, we explore how to play it on the harmonium. Begin with a comfortable starting note that suits your voice. Let the right hand follow the melody slowly, allowing space between phrases. There is no need to embellish or fill silence. This tune teaches release through simplicity.
This same kirtan melody will be used throughout the week. It will return during Saturday Rest & Retreat in a softer, slower form, and again on Sunday during Satsang as a familiar grounding presence. You are encouraged to practice it during the week and to share it with others in whatever way feels natural.
To complete tonight’s practice, we offer a simple sattvic snack that supports relaxation and calm. A warm preparation, offered with gratitude, can be a beautiful way to close the evening.
You can watch the full Friday Night Kirtan and harmonium lesson in the video above and return to it anytime during the week.
