Scriptural & Practical Benefits
In bhakti yoga, chanting the holy name of Kṛṣṇa is not symbolic, optional, or secondary. It is central. The Vedic scriptures repeatedly affirm that chanting the holy name is the most effective spiritual practice, especially in the present age.
Yet many sincere seekers still ask:
- Why chanting?
- Why the holy name specifically?
- What does chanting actually do — spiritually and practically?
The answers are not speculative. They are clearly explained in Bhagavad-gītā, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, and Caitanya-caritāmṛta.
This article explores why chanting the holy name is so powerful, using direct scriptural evidence, and explains how chanting transforms the heart and consciousness in daily life.
The Holy Name Is Not Symbolic — It Is Kṛṣṇa Himself
The foundation of chanting is nāma-tattva: the truth that the holy name of Kṛṣṇa is non-different from Kṛṣṇa Himself.

Bengali Script

Roman Transliteration
nāma cintāmaṇiḥ kṛṣṇaś
caitanya-rasa-vigrahaḥ
pūrṇaḥ śuddho nitya-mukto
’bhinnatvān nāma-nāminoḥ
English Translation
“The holy name of Kṛṣṇa is transcendentally blissful. It bestows all spiritual benedictions, for it is Kṛṣṇa Himself, the reservoir of all pleasure. Kṛṣṇa’s name is complete and is the form of all transcendental mellows. It is not a material name under any condition, and it is no less powerful than Kṛṣṇa Himself. Since Kṛṣṇa’s name is not contaminated by the material qualities, there is no question of its being involved with māyā. Kṛṣṇa’s name is always liberated and spiritual.”

Why this matters:
Chanting is not calling toward God — it is direct association with God through sound.
Chanting Is the Yuga-Dharma for Kali-yuga
The scriptures acknowledge that the present age (Kali-yuga) is spiritually difficult. Yet they also prescribe a single, powerful remedy.
Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 12.3.51
