Reflections on Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā 3.137
The path of bhakti is often spoken of in lofty philosophical terms, yet Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and His eternal associates consistently emphasized a process that is both simple and profound: constant chanting of the holy name and humble devotional service. In Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā 3.137, this essential instruction is expressed with great clarity through the words spoken in relation to Śrīla Haridāsa Ṭhākura, the great ācārya of the holy name.

English Translation
“Chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra continuously and render service to the tulasī plant by watering her and offering prayers to her. In this way you will very soon get the opportunity to be sheltered at the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa.”
The Simplicity of the Path
This verse does not present a complex or exclusive process. Instead, it reveals the most accessible doorway to spiritual success in this age:
- nirantara nāma lao — chant the holy name continuously
- kara tulasī sevana — serve Tulasī Devī with devotion
The promise is direct and compassionate:
“Very soon you will attain shelter at the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa.”
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu does not say this is one path among many — He presents it as the practical means for those who find surrender difficult due to conditioning, distraction, or sinful reactions.
Why Constant Chanting Is Emphasized
In his purport, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that surrender to Kṛṣṇa is the ultimate instruction of Bhagavad-gītā:
sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja
“Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me.”
Bhagavad-gītā 18.66
Devanāgarī Script
सर्वधर्मान् परित्यज्य
मामेकं शरणं व्रज ।
अहं त्वां सर्वपापेभ्यो
मोक्षयिष्यामि मा शुचः ॥ ६६ ॥
Roman Transliteration
sarva-dharmān parityajya
mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja
ahaṁ tvāṁ sarva-pāpebhyo
mokṣayiṣyāmi mā śucaḥ
English Translation
“Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear.”

Yet he also explains why most people struggle to do this immediately. Due to accumulated sinful reactions and deep material conditioning, surrender feels distant or impossible for many. Therefore, chanting the holy name becomes the merciful bridge.
Śrīla Prabhupāda writes that even if one cannot immediately surrender, one should:
- Chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra constantly
- Render service to Tulasī Devī
- Follow the instruction of Śrīla Haridāsa Ṭhākura
This process purifies the heart, making genuine surrender possible.
Haridāsa Ṭhākura and “nirantara nāma lao”
Śrīla Haridāsa Ṭhākura, honored as Nāmācārya, taught by example that the holy name itself is sufficient to bring one to Kṛṣṇa. His instruction — nirantara nāma lao — means do not stop chanting, regardless of circumstance.
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu reinforced this instruction with His own verse:
tṛṇād api su-nīcena taror iva sahiṣṇunā
amāninā māna-dena kīrtanīyaḥ sadā hariḥ
“One should chant the holy name of the Lord in a humble state of mind… In such a state one can chant the holy name constantly.”
Here, sadā and nirantara both mean always.
Why Tulasī Sevā Is Included
Service to Tulasī Devī is not incidental. She is eternally dear to Lord Kṛṣṇa, and service to her cultivates:
- Humility
- Daily devotional discipline
- Physical engagement in bhakti
- Protection from offenses
By combining sound (nāma) and service (sevā), this process engages body, mind, and heart together — creating a stable foundation for spiritual life.
Returning to the Holy Name
This verse perfectly captures the essence of returning to the holy name:
- Not as an occasional practice
- Not as a ritual
- But as a continuous relationship
For those who feel far from surrender, this instruction is deeply compassionate. It does not reject us for our limitations — it meets us where we are, and gently carries us forward.
If surrender feels difficult today, chant.
If purity feels distant, chant.
If faith feels weak, chant — and serve Tulasī.
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu assures us that through this process, surrender will come naturally.
Donations, if offered, are always voluntary and given in the spirit of supporting the mission and continuity of The Bhakti House.
Membership is a simple way to support The Bhakti House and to be part of a spiritual family that looks after one another and others.
We look forward to chanting, listening, and returning to the holy name together.
