It is a day of intensified consciousness.

In the Vaiṣṇava tradition, Ekādaśī is honored as a powerful opportunity to reduce bodily demands and increase spiritual absorption.

Translation

(Translation by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda)

Mahārāja Ambarīṣa always engaged his mind in meditating upon the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa, his words in describing the glories of the Lord, his hands in cleansing the Lord’s temple, his ears in hearing the words spoken by Kṛṣṇa or about Kṛṣṇa, his eyes in seeing the Deity of Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa’s temples and Kṛṣṇa’s places like Mathurā and Vṛndāvana, his sense of touch in touching the bodies of the Lord’s devotees, his sense of smell in smelling the fragrance of tulasī offered to the Lord, and his tongue in tasting the Lord’s prasāda.

Ekādaśī is modeled after this consciousness.

Engage everything.
Redirect everything.
Offer everything.

Why Ekādaśī Matters

Ekādaśī means “the eleventh day,” observed twice monthly.

But spiritually, it means:

• Simplify the body
• Intensify the soul
• Remember the Lord

Grains and beans are avoided.
The mind is steadied.
The heart is softened.
The chanting deepens.

How We Observe (ISKCON-Style)

At The Bhakti House in Jackson, Michigan, we keep Ekādaśī simple and sincere.

• Extra attentive chanting of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra
• Kīrtan — even a short, heartfelt session is powerful
• Reading or hearing from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam
• Simple Ekādaśī prasādam (no grains or beans)

Even if the observance is quiet and private, it is potent.

The Lord sees intention.

The Mahā-Mantra

Devanāgarī

हरे कृष्ण हरे कृष्ण
कृष्ण कृष्ण हरे हरे ।
हरे राम हरे राम
राम राम हरे हरे ॥

Roman Transliteration (IAST)

Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa
Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare
Hare Rāma Hare Rāma
Rāma Rāma Hare Hare

Ekādaśī is especially favorable for chanting.

Fewer distractions.
Less heaviness.
More clarity.

The Spirit of Amālakī Ekādaśī

Traditionally, this Ekādaśī is connected with:

• Remembrance of Lord Viṣṇu
• Purification through simplicity
• Honoring sacred observances with gratitude

The word “vrata” means vow.

Today is a vow of remembrance.
A vow of restraint.
A vow of devotion.

Break Fast (Parāṇa) — Jackson, Michigan

Saturday, February 28
7:09 AM – 10:15 AM (Local Time)

Breaking the fast within the proper window is part of the observance.

Spiritual discipline includes both fasting and honoring prasāda properly.

A Final Reflection

Ekādaśī is not about deprivation.
It is about refinement.

When bodily demands are reduced,
spiritual sensitivity increases.

Even one sincere day of deeper remembrance
can change the tone of the month.

May this Amālakī Vrata Ekādaśī bring clarity, steadiness, and renewed devotion to all.
