Vijayā Ekādaśī is a sacred fasting day dedicated to Lord Viṣṇu, observed by devotees as a powerful opportunity for spiritual victory through devotion, simplicity, and remembrance of the holy name. At The Bhakti House (TBH) in Jackson, Michigan, Vijayā Ekādaśī is observed in the traditional ISKCON style, with emphasis on chanting, hearing śāstra, and reducing material distractions.
The Sanskrit word vijayā means victory. On this Ekādaśī, devotees seek victory not over others, but over forgetfulness of Kṛṣṇa—returning the heart to its natural state of devotional service.
What Is Ekādaśī and Why It Is Observed
Ekādaśī occurs on the eleventh lunar day of the waxing and waning moon cycles and is described in Vaiṣṇava tradition as especially favorable for bhakti-yoga. On Ekādaśī, grains and beans are traditionally avoided, and extra time is dedicated to spiritual practices.
Ekādaśī is not simply about food restriction. Its purpose is to purify consciousness, minimize bodily demands, and redirect attention toward:
- Chanting the holy name
- Hearing sacred texts
- Remembering Lord Viṣṇu and Lord Kṛṣṇa
- Cultivating humility and surrender
Śrī Kṛṣṇa emphasizes that devotion is accepted not by opulence, but by sincerity.

English Translation
“If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, I will accept it.”
This verse sets the mood for Ekādaśī: simple offerings, made with devotion, are spiritually complete.
Vijayā Ekādaśī: Victory Through Devotion
Vijayā Ekādaśī is traditionally associated with success in devotional life and victory over internal obstacles such as laziness, distraction, and forgetfulness. Rather than forcing austerity, this day invites devotees to voluntarily simplify so that remembrance of Kṛṣṇa becomes easier and more natural.
Ekādaśī is especially favorable for chanting the holy name, which is the primary spiritual practice for this age.

Ekādaśī supports this instruction by creating space for deeper engagement with the holy name.
How We Observe Vijayā Ekādaśī at The Bhakti House (ISKCON-Style)
At The Bhakti House, Vijayā Ekādaśī is observed in a way that is traditional, accessible, and focused on devotion rather than strain.
Our observance includes:
- Extra japa
Devotees are encouraged to chant at least one additional round beyond their regular practice, if possible. - Kīrtan and devotional music
Congregational chanting helps uplift the heart and mind. - Śāstra reading or hearing
From Bhagavad-gītā, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, or Caitanya-caritāmṛta. - Simple Ekādaśī prasādam
Traditionally avoiding grains and beans, including:- Fruits
- Roots
- Nuts
- Dairy (if taken)
The emphasis is not perfection, but sincerity and remembrance.
Ekādaśī and the Path of Surrender
Ekādaśī supports the ultimate instruction of Kṛṣṇa—to surrender to Him fully. For those who find surrender difficult, Ekādaśī offers a gentle, practical training toward that goal.
