A sacred remembrance for The Bhakti House
Śrīla Narottama Dāsa Ṭhākura is one of the most beloved saints in the Gaudiya Vaiṣṇava tradition and a radiant bearer of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s mercy. His appearance is not merely a historical moment, but a divine gift for the souls of Kali-yuga—showing how the deepest spiritual truths can be expressed through humility, longing, and song.
Born into a royal family in Kheturi, Bengal, Narottama Dāsa Ṭhākura renounced all privilege to seek pure devotion. Although Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu had already departed from this world, Narottama carried forward His mission with uncompromising sincerity under the shelter of Śrīla Lokanātha Dāsa Gosvāmī. He taught not through scholarship alone, but through lived surrender and heartfelt prayer.
That surrender is revealed vividly in one of his most famous prayers, quoted by Śrīla Prabhupāda in the purport to Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 5.16.20–21:

হা হা প্রভু নন্দসুতো, বৃষভানুসুতাযুত,
করুণা করহ এইবার
নরোত্তম দাস কহে, না ঠেলিহা রাঙা পায়,
তোমা বিনে কে আছে আমার
Devanāgarī:
हा हा प्रभु नन्दसुतो, वृषभानुसुतायुत,
करुणा करह एइबार
नरोत्तम दास कहे, ना ठेलिहा राङ्गा पाय,
तोमा विने के आछे आमार
Roman:
hā hā prabhu nanda-suto, vṛṣabhānu-sutā-yuta,
karuṇā karaha ei-bāra
narottama dāsa kahe, nā ṭheliha rāṅgā pāya,
tomā vine ke āche āmāra
Translation:
“O my Lord, O son of Nanda Mahārāja, accompanied by the daughter of Vṛṣabhānu, please bestow Your mercy upon me this time.
Narottama Dāsa says: do not push me away with Your beautiful reddish lotus feet—without You, who else is there for me?”
This prayer captures the heart of Narottama Dāsa Ṭhākura’s teaching: complete dependence on Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa, with no claim of qualification—only a cry for mercy.
Narottama Dāsa Ṭhākura is also revered as the great theologian-poet of our tradition. His bhajans are sung daily across the world and are accepted as revealed truth, not poetic sentiment. Through simple Bengali verses, he revealed the essence of guru-tattva, nāma-bhajana, and life in the association of devotees.
That aspiration is expressed in another verse quoted by Śrīla Prabhupāda in the purport to Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.9.28:

তাঁদের চরণ সেবি ভক্ত-সনে বাস
জন্মে জন্মে হয় এই অভিলাষ
Devanāgarī:
ताँदेर चरण सेवी भक्त-सने वास
जन्मे जन्मे हय एइ अभिलाष
Roman:
tāṅdera caraṇa sevi bhakta-sane vāsa
janme janme haya ei abhilāṣa
Translation:
“May I serve at their lotus feet and live in the association of devotees;
this is my desire, birth after birth.”
Here, Narottama Dāsa Ṭhākura reveals that the goal of bhakti is not isolation or prestige, but humble service under the shelter of devotees—life after life.
He also played a pivotal historical role by organizing the Kheturi Mahotsava, the first great festival uniting the followers of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu after His disappearance. In doing so, Narottama preserved the living heart of the movement: kīrtana, community, and shared devotion centered on love of God.
On this auspicious appearance day, The Bhakti House offers humble gratitude and remembrance of Śrīla Narottama Dāsa Ṭhākura. We pray that his mood of surrender, his longing for mercy, and his attachment to the association of devotees may awaken in our own hearts.
